Rough Threads is closing
After six absolutely fantastic years, we at Rough Threads are sad to announce that we are closing our doors and will no longer be hosting our events. Rough Threads has been an institution in many community centres, and we'd like to thank each and every volunteer, supporter and visitor who has shaped Rough Threads into such a wonderful organisation. You have all helped make our events warm, connective and collaborative and we are so proud of the community spirit that has been generated. Together, we have helped over 6000 people in need, distributed more than 75000 items of clothing, shoes and toiletries and provided access to over 2000 hard-to-find services. We couldn’t have done this without your help. We know, that even though Rough Threads events have now ended, the message of ‘we are all in this together’ will live on through each and every one of you. We look forward to seeing what you all do next! #roughthreads #weareallinthistogether #communityinaction #sydney #notforprofit #thankyou #volunteers #colloboration #community #connection #sixwonderfulyears #generosity #spirit #humanity #togetherness #friendship #action
Who are we?
We are a community driven not for profit, hosting free events for disadvantaged Australians to provide them with a more hopeful future and a positive sense of self. We believe that by improving self esteem and connecting people to key support services, we provide people the tools that can help them work toward their goals. Our regular client centric events are tailored to boost health, wellness and social connection and we work with Community Agencies to deliver events with their local community in mind.
From humble beginnings offering a clothing store for Sydney’s homeless, we have grown into a much larger organisation, supporting anyone experiencing disadvantage and isolation. Our clients range from those experiencing homelessness to asylum seekers and refugees and our events span across NSW and the ACT.
How do we do that?
Our 250 strong volunteer team support a network of events which we call Rough Threads.
Completely free for visitors and hosted with the support of Community Agencies and local Government bodies, the events provide visitors with access to everything from haircuts to GP advice, skills training, an international postal service and back to work solutions.
Moving people out of disadvantage takes a holistic approach. To be able to address social issues such as unemployment and social exclusion more needs to be done to address poverty and the causes of poverty. Rough Threads helps provide people with access to support services, grooming, health check-ups and back to work programs, which means that people affected by poverty are given the best chance to break the cycle of poverty and unemployment.
We encourage a forum of community connection where those needing support can find it from agencies and locals within their own community. The events are positive for both visitor and volunteer and encourage social interaction which breaks down feelings of isolation and creates what we like to call, social connectedness. We are proud of our organisation’s expansion, our ability to meet our clients needs and the sophisticated, diverse and far-reaching services that are now included at each event. We are on a mission to be enablers of long-lasting positive social change for communities across Australia and we’d love your support to help us do that.
