Our Darlinghurst event in October turned out to be our biggest event of 2016! The sun was out and so were our visitors and volunteers. Over 90 volunteers worked together to help 500+ people from all across the city connect with key services and hard to find goods. The feedback from our suppliers and Community Agencies was overwhelmingly positive and we had many new faces and families join us on the day.
We distributed over 1200 meals, passed forward 8400 items of clothing, 300 pairs of shoes, performed 90 haircuts and 50 massages, sent 32 letters around the world and put an entire pallet of fruit and veg into the hands of families and individuals in need.
We also unveiled our latest event area, The Undie Emporium.
Thanks to support from Thread Together and Mummies Paying It Forward we were able to hand out 800 pairs of new knickers and 500 brand new designer bra's.
What's happening next?
The Rough Threads team have been nominated in the 2016 Volunteer of the Year Awards. To us, it’s our volunteers who deserve the kudos, they bring their 'A' game to each and every event and we couldn’t do it without them. We are excited to meet the other great organisations at the Awards and see what other fantastic work is taking place in our community.
Preparations have also begun for our February event which will be hosted in conjunction with the Asylum Seekers Centre in Newtown. This specialist event is designed with the Asylum Seeker Centres clients in mind and brings a unique event day to the Centre. This will be our second year with the Centre and we are thrilled to be building such a strong partnership.
In 2017 we will continue our events in Manly and Darlinghurst along with adding a new event area in Western Sydney. Volunteer opportunities are now open so register your interest to get involved in one or more of these events.
Our donation centres will also reopen soon - keep an eye on facebook for the announcements.
Thank you to everyone that supported us in 2016, we are thrilled to be moving into our 6th year, widening our reach and working with such dynamic organisations across Sydney. "
